The Rare Wine Co.'s NV Declaration of Independence Special Reserve Madeira Medium Dry is a special bottling produced to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, an event that was celebrated with the best Madeira of the day. This bottling is a blend of Bual, Sercial, Bastardo, Verdelho and Tinta Negra. About 15% of the wines are 80 years old. It's a Medium-Dry style, so in this range probably closest to the Thomas Jefferson bottling. Aromatic and light on its feet, but with gorgeous understated depth, the Special Reserve is compelling. Hints of orange peel, nutmeg, dried flowers, chamomile and rose petal waft from the glass. Silky contours wrap it all together in style. Over the years, I have tasted many gorgeous Madeiras from Rare Wine Co.'s Historic Series. This is unquestionably one of the finest. Readers will want to pick up at least two bottles, because the first will not last long once opened.

Pale copper, delicate by design, a nod to the lighter styles that filled colonial glasses 250 years ago. Dried chamomile and preserved tangerine on the nose, the palate a gentle honeycomb and brown sugar sweetness with a savory sesame edge and bracing finish. Pair with a benne wafer.
