History - The 2021 Esporão Assobio is a red blend from the Douro region of Portugal. Produced by Herdade do Esporão, this wine highlights the region's traditional winemaking techniques while offering a modern and fresh expression. It is produced under integrated production methods, minimizing chemical interventions. The Douro Valley is marked by steep terraces and schist soils, providing excellent drainage and mineral complexity. The 2021 vintage experienced a warmer and drier winter, followed by a spring with fluctuating temperatures and rainfall. Summer conditions balanced ripening with cool nights preserving acidity, resulting in well-structured and aromatic grapes.
Tasting Notes - Vivid red hue with violet undertones, the aromatic profile is fresh and inviting, with vibrant red fruits such as cherries and raspberries complemented by hints of vanilla, oak, and a touch of spice. The wine offers a medium-to-full body and balanced acidity. Notes of black cherries, plums, and blackberries dominate, with subtle earthy undertones and hints of licorice. The tannins are smooth and well-integrated, creating a harmonious and enjoyable mouthfeel. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering notes of ripe red fruits and a touch of baking spice.
