Conti Capponi Villa Calcinaia Description
The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna Bastignano undoubtedly maintains the stylistic horizon of the area's finest wines. Created in 2006 as the forerunner of a new generation of estate-produced Sangiovese wines, it has become, we might say, the flagship wine of the Greve in Chianti winery. Made from the vineyard of the same name and aged partly in oak and partly in concrete, it possesses intense cellar aromas, licorice root, and ripe cherry, lending a striking aromatic sweetness. A hint of iron also appears, both on the nose and on a palate that plays on structure and depth, without ripples and with an acidic fragrance that makes it vibrant and continuous. Villa Calcinaia, the protagonist of the Additional Geographical Unit of Greve in Chianti, can be counted among the historic estates of the Chianti Classico denomination, not only for demographic reasons (the estate was purchased by the Capponi family in 1524), but also because it has successfully maintained a stylistic signature of evolved classicism and attention to the lessons of tradition. At its helm today is Sebastiano Capponi, who coordinates the work of the estate's 32 hectares of organic vineyards and the cellar, where operations are almost bare bones, with maturation in concrete and wooden vats of various sizes, resulting in a total production of 100,000 bottles.
James Suckling: 94 Points
This is rich and characterful, with ripe dark berries, plum skin, dark licorice and hints of leather, cocoa and tar. Full-bodied, deep and structured, with tense, chewy tannins that are very fine and polished. Long and spicy. It needs some time to integrate better. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2027.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
It as a wine with a brilliant ruby color and a "gorgeous nose" that features intense floral and fruity notes. The palate is full-bodied and well-balanced.
Decanter Magazine: 94 Points
This vintage had aromas of sweet spice and tobacco, along with wild woodland berries. The palate was described as round and smooth, balanced by a salty minerality and chalky tannins.
