Bodegas Bhilar Description
VINEYARD
A village wine from Elvillar de Álava. The grapes are sourced from young, Biodynamically farmed vines with an average of 30 years of age. The vineyards are dry-farmed bush vines in calcareous clay soils.
VINIFICATION
85% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, 5% Viura. The grapes are harvested manually and immediately transported to the winery where the grapes are destemmed and placed in concrete tanks. Spontaneous fermentation starts with native yeast and without temperature control allowing the process to occur naturally.
AGING
Once finished, the wine is pressed and placed into French oak of different capacities where it aged for 12 months.
Wine Advocate: 91 Points
The red 2022 Bhilar, a village wine from Elvillar, was produced with grapes from their younger biodynamic vines and is a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Viura and 10% Graciano. It was produced with 20% full clusters that fermented with indigenous yeasts. It matured in 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels for one year. It has 14% alcohol and is balsamic and exotic, with notes of cola nut and other spices and herbs. The palate is juicy and round, with clean and focused flavors and fine tannins. 26,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2023.
Tim Atkin, MW: 90 Points
Up a point since I sampled it a year ago, this is a younger vine cuvee of Tempranillo, 25% Garnacha and 10% Viura from David Sampedro's home village of Elvillar. Floral, earthy and chewy, with some meaty reduction, plum and bramble fruit and plenty of underlying grip. 2025-29
