Arnaud Mortet Description
2016 was the debut vintage for Arnaud Mortet's own label, a separate structure from the Domaine Denis Mortet—over which he has presided since 2006—but whose wines are made in the same facility. These newly acquired parcels are still more or less a work in progress, though having tasted 2016s last year, it seemed to me that several of the cuvées had already found a touch more energy and interest. Where appellations overlap, Mortet has made efforts to differentiate his label from the Domaine Denis Mortet: his own Gevrey Village hails from the south of the appellation whereas the Cinq Terroirs cuvée hails from the north, and the Domaine's destemmed Lavaux Saint-Jacques contrasts with his use of fruit with pedicels intact for his own cuvée from this climat. Careful shoppers will want to home in on the Charmes-Chambertin, the cuvée which is currently the most in line with the standards I am confident Mortet will soon attain across the whole range.
Wine Advocate: 87-89 Points
Offering up aromas of sweet berries, plums, rich spices and espresso roast, Arnaud Mortet's 2017 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is medium to full-bodied, ample and open-knit, with a simple, somewhat facile profile. Of all this new label's bottlings, it's the cuvée that will require the most work to bring the vines up to the Mortet standard and find the depth and energy it's missing.
