AA Badenhorst Family Wines Description
Winemaker
Adi Badenhorst
HISTORY
Adi Badenhorst has the unique ability to fashion spectacular wines at all levels of the price spectrum. Adi saw tremendous potential in the under $10 category, and thought that by adding a little more care in the vinification of the grapes while maintaining cost efficiency in production, he was able to produce beautiful wines for a very reasonable price. The Curator wines are unique blends from the fantastic library of wine parcels at Adi’s disposal.
VINIFICATION and MATURATION
These lucky grapes are grown by 4 different farmers on a multitude of different sites, mainly granite and slate soils. The grapes are acclimatised to the Swartland and always deliver consistency in flavor and aromas when they arrive in the cellar. Vinification is simple and straightforward, it’s how Badenhorst likes to keep it! Grapes are picked by hand, chilled overnight and then whole bunch pressed and fermented in concrete tanks. Minimum extraction occurs during this time to allow the fruit to be expressive. 6 months after fermentation, when things have calmed down, the wine is racked off its lees and is ready for bottling - unfined, with a light filtration.
Tasting Notes:
The Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz are the bolder, expressive components in this wine with structure and a firmness. The Grenache and Cinsault temper the tanins resulting in a wine that’s full bodied but easy to drink, are easy to open (another bonus) and to share!
Wine Spectator
"A brambly overtone of floral and herb notes accent well-spiced raspberry, blackberry and citrus peel flavors in this lively, easy-drinking red. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. Drink now."
