This lightly sparkling "prickly" Petillant from Spain was grown organically from Muscat, Macabeo and Xarel-lo grapes from vines up to 40+ years in age and naturally made with indigenous yeasts. The carbonation is created by the Charmat method of secondary fermentation in tank. It is a delicious summer wine to sip by the pool or in the backyard. At only $16.99 it is an absolute bargain. Perfect for this Father's Day weekend!! Cheers. 2020 Avinyó Blanc Petillant WINERY NOTES: "Avinyó Petillant is a vi d’agulla, the Catalan term for a 'prickly' wine bottled with a little natural effervescence retained from the winemaking process. This vibrant and refreshing wine is the traditional summertime quaffer of the Penedès region of Catalonia, and it’s perfect for drinking out of a porrón. Petillant is made with a blend of two organically-farmed, estate vineyards. Finca La Guardia is the highest, most rugged vineyard on the property at 350 meters; here muscat de Frontignan was planted in 2003 in the stony calcareous-clay soils. Macabeo and xarel-lo are grown in the Finca Can Fontanals vineyard, planted from 1978 to 1988. Vintage –2020 was a challenging year, which turned out to produce excellent wines at Avinyó in Penedès. An extremely rainy spring and significant damage from mildew meant an average loss of at least 30% of the vineyard and production: the cost of organic production. However, 2020 was an important year for the Avinyó team, where controlling the farming of their estate-owned vineyards and selection of grapes was the key to their success. The 2020 wines are aromatic with balanced acidity, fine fruit, and very charming in their ease of drinkability. There is less of the 2020 vintage, so drink up! Vinification Notes – After a nighttime harvest, the grapes are very gently pressed in a pneumatic press. The alcoholic fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks between 14°C and 16°C. The wine is then cold stabilized before the beginning of secondary fermentation in stainless steel tanks with the addition of native yeast and raw cane sugar. The wine is bottled in all its freshness in January."
