Our journey began in 1998 with the release of our first wines under the Failla-Jordan label—an Alban Vineyard Viognier (Edna Valley) and the Que Syrah Syrah (Sonoma Coast). That same year, we began planting the initial blocks of what would become our Estate Vineyard in Cazadero, though the first Estate wines wouldn’t emerge for several years. Founder Ehren Jordan, deeply influenced by his viticultural training in France, has always approached winemaking with a spirit of exploration. He delights in coaxing out the nuances of his favorite varietals—Syrah, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir—across a spectrum of cool-climate sites, soil types, and rootstocks. In 1998, we expanded our holdings by acquiring land adjacent to our original vineyard, planting five acres of rootstock in 2002 and grafting Pinot Noir clones in 2003. Today, our 11-acre Estate vineyard in western Sonoma County produces Syrah, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir that express the pure character of California’s coolest growing regions. Ehren's fascination with Pinot Noir began in 1999 with fruit from Keefer Ranch Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. This sparked a long-term pursuit of distinctive, cool-climate Pinot sources. Over the years, our Pinot Noir program has grown to include fruit from acclaimed sites such as Hirsch Vineyard (2001), Occidental Ridge (2005), Peay and Pearlessence Vineyards (2006), Whistler (2009), Savoy (2012), Platt (2015), and most recently, Seven Springs Vineyard in Oregon’s Eola-Amity Hills AVA. Chardonnay and Syrah are equally central to Failla’s identity. Today, we craft eight different Chardonnays, sourcing from esteemed vineyards like Hudson in Carneros and Haynes in Coombsville, while also farming our own Chardonnay from a property we acquired in 2013 on Olivet Road in Sonoma, adjacent to the renowned Olivet Vineyard. Syrah holds a special place in Ehren’s heart. It was the first grape he farmed and fermented during his time with Jean Luc Colombo in Cornas in the early 1990s. At Failla, we honor that heritage by working with fruit from Hudson in Napa, Kick Ranch in Sonoma, and our own Estate Vineyard near the Pacific Coast.
